Shockwaves NME Awards 2010: The Highlights

Last night saw the return of the NME Awards at London’s O2 Academy Brixton. And very exciting it was too…

Big winners of the night were Muse and Kasabian who both picked up two awards each.  It would seem that Matt Bellamy of Muse also had his eye on the Worst Dressed Award, which unsurprisingly went to Lady Gaga (who also incidently won Best Dressed!). Matt told reporters on the night “Worst Dressed is my favourite award” – well sorry Matt you’ll just have to make do with Best British Band, duh.

Congratulations to one of our favourites, Bombay Bicycle Club, who collected the award for Best New Band. The award was presented by the lovely Ellie Goulding and Mat Horne amid huge cheers from the audience.

What a great start to what looks to be a really successful year for the boys from Bombay Bicycle Club. After selling out their own winter tour in December, the band also headed the support on the recent NME Awards Tour earlier this month.  Next week also sees the release of live favourite ‘Evening/Morning as a super limited edition 7” (only 400 copies) with the band doing the artwork for each one of the copies individually.

This band might be young but they’ve certainly proved themselves worthy over the past 12 months.  With another headline gig at London’s HMV Forum scheduled for April, 2010 looks likely to be a great year.

Other winners included ‘God Like Genius’ Paul Weller, The Specials, Jamie T, Paramore, Arctic Monkeys, The Big Pink, Biffy Clyro and La Roux.
